Alfred S. Hart was an American photographer who is best known for his work documenting the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad in the mid-1800s. He was born on October 16, 1816 in Norwich, Connecticut and died on April 4, 1908 in Sacramento, California. Hart's photographs of the railroad construction were instrumental in promoting the pioneering spirit and ingenuity of the time, as well as the progress of the American West. Hart’s photographs are today considered significant historical artifacts, illustrating the transformation of America during the 19th century.
